A Guide to Tattoo Aftercare

Now that you have a brand new tattoo, how do you look after it? Your tattoo is an open wound, so following aftercare instructions is important to avoid infections and complications as your tattoo heals.

Immediately after your tattoo:
Your artist will wrap your tattoo either in glad-wrap or in ‘second-skin’ breathable medical wrap. Your artist will provide instructions on how and when to remove any wraps on your tattoos, but as a general rule…

  • Glad-wrap: You can remove the glad-wrap as soon as you get home. Once removed, wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and antibacterial soap. There is no need for creams over the first 1-3 days as your tattoo dries out.

  • Second-skin: You can leave on second-skin for 2-5 days depending on how well it sticks to your skin. It is normal for ink and bodily fluids to collect inside of the second-skin, creating a blister-type effect. Do not pop the second skin to remove this build-up unless you are able to fully remove the second skin . Do not try to re-stick the second skin if it comes off early, as you may trap bacteria beneath the bandage. After 5 days you can remove the second-skin in the shower under hot water by peeling away from the centre of the body.

2 - 5 days after your tattoo:
Let your tattoo dry out over the first few days. Only wash your tattoo once per day with unscented antibacterial soap. Gently pat your tattoo dry with a clean towel to avoid tearing off any scabs. Use little to no moisturizer unless the scabbing or dryness is too uncomfortable. If you need to moisturize for the itchiness or discomfort, use a small amount of scent-free cream (Hustle Butter, pawpaw, etc.).

Your tattoo should remain more dry than wet, as moisture is a magnet for bacteria.

1 - 2 weeks after your tattoo…

  • Don’t soak your tattoo.

  • Don’t over moisturise your tattoo.

  • Don’t over-expose your tattoo to sunlight.

  • Don’t pick the scabs.

  • Don’t itch the area - salt sprays can be useful in alleviating itch discomfort.

*

How long does it take to heal?
Most tattoos will be surface-level healed within 2 - 4 weeks. This means there will be few or no scabs, no leakage, and no bleeding. Your tattoo may still have a ‘sheen’ to it or look slightly dry because your tattoo will stay healing for 3 - 6 months beneath the surface.

*

Why is it scabby?
Scabbing is a natural part of the healing process for tattoos. It might look a little gnarly, but scabs are completely normal and a sign of good healing.

What abnormalities should I look out for?

  • Pimples or bumps around the area, indicating infection.

  • Swelling around the tattoo.

  • A burning sensation or heat radiating from the area.

  • Excessive redness or rashes.

  • Excessive moisture without intentionally moisturising the tattoo.

  • Pus or other discharge.
